Hi everyone!
I am a 19 yr old university student in USA (Not a US citizen or Green card holder) who is considering transferring to Canada. I am trying to figure out what documents I need to provide to apply for a Canadian student visa. When I looked through the checklist for study visa application, I saw that I may need to provide old or expired passports if applicable. Unfortunately, my previous expired passport was thrown away by my parents back in my home country. To add more information, I already have a Canadian visitor visa which I used to visit Canada last year and stayed there for one week. I fell in love with Canada and now decided that I want to study in Canada. My previous passport expired 6 years ago.

You don't need an old passport to apply for a visa as you said if applicable. You only need an old passport when there is a visa stamp in which is a counterfoil.

In my knowledge, you might need to input your old passport number when filling your form.

..to be on a safer side, you can just state it on your SOP that you disposed it off after expiration, and if you can still figure the old passport number then add it, but before then, I don't think you need an old passport to apply for a study permit(when not been asked)

If you have travelled anywhere with your old passport within the last 10 years, then just send a photocopy of the bio page and the immigration stamps. The reason they ask for old passport is that in the background declaration they ask for your travel history of the last 10 years and will use the old passport stamps to verify this information. If you dont send your old passport it wont lead to rejection but it may slow down the processing as they will spend more time verifying your travel history.
