Hi there everyone...I have a bit of confusion over the whole thing. I turned pr in May and then in July I went for vacation for 2 months and returned on Sept. So, since I knew I would travel, I didn't bother applying for ohip even though I have stayed more than 5 yrs in the province. The other day I got sick and had to spend a lot since I don't use any private insurance.
So, I went to make my ohip card and they said since u travelled in sept, u have to wait till mid december for 3 months and I also asked what if i have to travel again for 4-5months in januray-feb( Not sure, but wanted to know). the lady was in a bad mood and said then don't apply for it at all, go for Private ones and read all the claws and all...like it will be a fraud if you knowingly give out wrong info.

now my question is , suppose I go and make the card after 2 weeks,
1. how long will i have to wait to receive the card by mail
2. will they give me a temp card no which i can use immediately
3. What if i have to travel for 4/5 months in jan/feb....i don't care if my ohip will be deactivated..i just don't want to fall in any trouble.

Before you all come to any wrong conclusion ..please let me say you, I don't want to do anything wrong with the OHIP facilities. I have been here for more than 6 yrs and I don't want to do this small and silly stuffs . I stayed clean all my life and don't want to be called fraud for this thing. My only concern is if I do get the card and then have to travel, what should I do, should I go to Service Not and tell them to voluntarily cancel the card? what if I don't inform them and leave?will I have to report at the airport? will it be considered fraud if i don't inform them and leave?when I travel I can guarantee i will never use my card outside .The whole thing is so confusing and stupid...pls help me as I don't want to be in any kind of problem and called a fraud for this silly thing.

In order to be eligible for OHIP, you must stay in ON at least 5 out of the first 6 months after you established residency, that is after you got back from your trip and after that, it's just 5/12 months you must stay. If you find yourself having to leave and staying outside for more than an month in those first 6 months, you should notify OHIP and they will decide if to cancel your card or not. If you do not tell them and keep your card when you should have lost it, you could be accused of fraud if they find out.
