OHIP and SIN after landing

We will be in Canada for precisely 10 days to make our landing to get out PR card and then will be coming back to US and going back to Canada permanently say after 1 year. Is it a good idea to apply for OHIP and SIN while we are there for 10 days and just keep the cards ready. Or is it a necessity to have SIN or OHIP even if we are not there. If we don't get them will that create a problem later on?

You may get SIN because it is just a 9-digit number (there are no cards anymore). With OHIP it is a different story. There is a 3 months delay period and you will be in US by then.
Then, when you come back to Ontario a year later you will have to start from scrach.

Why there are no cards anymore? I've got my new one recently.

SIN you can get right away with no problems, just go to nearest government office after landing.

If you have not established residency in Ontario, you may be ineligible to even register for an OHIP card.

When applying for OHIP card you must prove that you have Ontario residency. They will only accept certain specific documents for you to prove this. Take a look at "List 2" from here: http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf
If you don't have 1 of those specific documents that shows your Ontario address, you will not be able to register.

Regardless, if you go back to US for a year after landing, you won't be eligible for OHIP coverage until 3 months after you permanently move back to Canada. So there is no rush, just wait until you actually move back here to apply for the card.

They are phasing them out to save money and also to prevent identity theft. I believe as from March they have started to stop issuing them. So no more white and red plastic cards.
