Friends,

Here is my circumstance -

I got married in May 2012 in a religious wedding in India.

At that time both my wife & I were on a US student visa hence we didn't bother to get a marriage certificate from India (also due lack of awareness).

Since I graduated and my status changed from F1 to H1B, I wanted to show my wife as my dependent to get her on H4.

And since we didn't have any official document showing that we are married, we decided to register our wedding in the US.

So our marriage date as per the marriage certificate is Feb 2014.

My question is -

Which date should I enter for -

Form IMM1344E Question 8 (b)

(If you are married or in common-law relationship) Provide the date on which you were married or entered into the common-law relationship?

Should the answer be May 2012 (religious wedding with no document) or Feb 2014 (marriage registration for document purpose)

Please advise. Thanks.

It doesn't matter, just write a clarification on a separate sheet of paper.

You could also write in both dates, like so:

Date of Religious Ceremony - xxxx
Date of Registration -xxxx

I agree. Write both dates, and include a letter of explanation.

Thanks a lot for your response.

I was thinking the same to write both the dates but wasn't sure if that was correct. This helps. I will write an explanation for using 2 different dates.

Thanks again :)
