Obtaining SIN number

I read a thread posted a few years back about landing that said you can go the same day you land to get your SIN number. However, on the form to get a SIN number it states all permanent residents need to bring their PR card along (as well as other documents). Just wondering if anyone who has landed recently could comment on their experience.

You don't need the PR card you just go to Service Canada. My husband did it the day after we landed

thank you. Just realized I read the info wrong. Says "provide one of these documents" and I read it as "provide all of these documents" -- sorry for the post. Not sure how to delete this.

Sometimes you don't get a SIN straight away. My husband went into Service Canada about a month after landing and they couldn't find his information in the system. They sent him home and told him they would mail the SIN when the info became available. It finally arrived a couple of months later. He actually got his PR card faster!

That is not normal. You probably got bamboozled. If they can't find it in the system there are other things that can be done. Probably it was an issue with CBSA officer when he/she did the landing.

They might not have to deal with this sort of thing very often. Even though we are right on the border, I don't think too many people land here. The woman might not have known what else to do. She was very nice and I'm sure she did her best.

You can use your CoPR within a year of landing to get a SIN number. After one year you'll need a valid PR card to apply for one.
