Hello!

I am currently employed as a researcher in the Netherlands doing a project.
Me and my wife plan to come to Toronto for 6 months next year. I can support myself financially as I will be working on my research project (finishing the analysis and writing research articles) and will get paid by the research institute in the Netherlands.

I wonder if it is possible for me to obtain a work permit for 6 months if I can for instance find a "physical" work place (at for instance the University of Toronto), even though the University will not be paying me any salary? I can ask a research professor to invite me to come work at the University, create a work place for me so I can do my research there and write an invitation letter that I can submit when applying for a work permit..

The reason I ask this is if I can get a temporary work permit, my wife can apply for an open work permit, so she can work in Toronto as well.

Please let me know if anybody has any advice or idea's how to arrange an work permit for myself!
Thank you!

You can't arrange a work permit yourself. To qualify to apply for a work permit you must first find and employer in Canada willing to offer you a full time job. That employer must then obtain an approved Labour Market Opinion to request permission to hire you. Once you have the job offer and the LMO has been approved, you can then apply for a work permit.

The situation you have described will not allow you to apply for a work permti. If your wife wishes to work, then she will have to go the employer job offer + LMO route.
