Hi,
I'm a RN with diploma nursing of 9 yrs experience from India, just received my PR visa, yet not found the job in canada.

Planning to land in Toronto, but, people say that ontario nursing board does not allow diploma's to enter as a RN.
Some of my friends advise that the registration for RN in other province also takes longer time.
so, suggesting me to apply for RPN in Toranto-ontario which seems to be bit lesser time for processing than for RN.

So, i am just in oscillation, whether to apply for RN registration in any other province?? even not sure about the province??
or to apply for RPN registration in Ontario??

Plz discuss and recommend me in this regard, and i have to recide sooner and start processing as my visa gets expired in next 8 months time

Hello,

Congratulations on the Visa process. You are quite lucky as I rarely come on the site anymore.

I am a nurse also in Toronto.

Yes, in Ontario, you will not be able to register as a nurse with a diploma. Usually, if you have a 3 year diploma, you will need to do a 2 year degree at York University in Toronto to become a registered nurse. Meanwhile you will be able to register as a Registered Practical Nurse if the College of Nurses of Ontario approves your credential. The first step is to submit your documents to the College of Nurses of Ontario, for anything to be done, they will need to assess your credential to see if it is good for practicing in Ontario and provide you with a letter of direction (next steps for you to take). Even if they will allow you to work as a RPN, you will need to write an exam. Note that the registration process takes time and cost money, so I suggest you start the process even before you arrive in Canada (once you have the visa). Also, I suggest you contact health force Ontario (search online for them). When you contact them from abroad, you can normally speak with a counsellor by appointment.

As you are thinking of other provinces, you may decide to try Ontario and the other province you are thinking about concurrently and see which one works (if you have the money). Most province in Canada requires a degree to become a registered nurse but there are a few exceptions. You will need to search the College of Nurses or the Registered Nurses Association of each of the 12 province to know which one does not.

Hope this helps.

Inormally dont come online so email me if you post and i dont reply.

Hello there in India.

Its much advisable to apply for RPN if you only have a diploma. With a diploma to apply for RN will be your money down the drain. Get the RPN and once you arrive you could work it out up. The rules changed recently that for one to practice as an RN you must have a degree in any kind of nursing.

Hope it helps. My husband has a degree in Mental Health in UK but we still applied for RPN because the degree was not in General Nursing.

Hello,

You need to be careful with the use of the word RPN. In some provinces (in west Canada) RPN means registered psychiatric nurse. This are nurses who only have specialised training in psychiatric nurses or mental health. In Ontario and many province, RPN is used interchangeable as LPN, it means Registered Practical Nurse or Licenced Practical Nurse. The scope of practice of practical nurses vary by province.

In Ontario, RPN means Registered Practical Nurse. While RN wage normally start from around 29.50/hour, RPN wage starts at around 23per hour. RPN and RN have the same body of knowledge. But RN have more specialized knowledge and indepth. RPN are allowed to give injections, give medications, do health teaching, supervise personal support workers (ie. health care aids), dressing change, tracheostomy care etc. So, they can basically do almost all the practical skill (if not all) that the RN can do. Some hospitals (not all) now allow RPN to start and maintain intravenous infusion. RPN have extremely low or no level of training in research, public health and leadership. Hence, if RPN work in public health, you will see them only in limited areas, ie. immunization clinics. They also do community home vists. RPN are much much less likely to be seen in leadership roles. I have also never seen an RPN work in the ICU. RPNs are increasingly getting hired in emergency although its not that common. The majority of RPN work in long term care, especially nursing homes.

I finished writing and then I realized I didnt answer your question. So, to anwer your question. I am thinking what you want is a practical nurse position and not psychiatric nurse. To get a job as a practical nurse, you can apply to any province. Also, I believe there are still a couple of province that you dont need a degree to work there as a registered nurse. One I think is Quebec but of course you need english in this province. I suggest you look at the regulatory bodies of each province. But Alberta may be one (not sure). All province have practical nursing registration. So choose any that you like. But remember the scope of practice, i.e. the role of the practical nurse varries according to province as there are some province where practical nurses do not do IV start or other procedures.

Hope this helps.
