We are a Canadian/American. Purple getting married and will be submitting our package shortly. We are going to have a small ceremony and parents from both sides will be attending. Is it necessary for us to get a notarized letter from the parents on both sides of the family stating that they know our relationship is genuine?

I don't think that'd be necessary, if they will be at the wedding. Just get some good photos of you all together. Photos of each of you meeting each other's families on a prior occasion would also be nice.

Annotate your photos, indicating when it was taken, who are in the photo, what their relationship is to the sponsor/applicant, and a description of the event and/or location.

They can certainly write simple letters to help with your proofs of relationship. This is actually recommended.

However they don't really need to be notarized.

How small is small? Just the two of you and your parents? If people not present will be sending cards and such, certainly include those. I suspect the burden of proof is lower for Canada/US couples than for overseas relationships, but you should include proof of how your relationship started and developed over time.

Just siblings, parents and grand parents, and a small get together with friends the following night. 11 people total

We had about 30 people attend our marriage, a nice reception, 3 smaller celebratory dinners of about 20 people each, and affidavits from my parents, who were not able to travel. Still ended up with the dreaded Section 4(1) - not genuine relationship. Hence, currently in appeal.

Again, I suspect the burden of proof is much less for US/Canadian couples. Hopefully other such couples can chime in with their experiences.

We had my wife's parents and sister and my two parents attend our wedding. We included pictures, and a notarized letter from my parents. We didn't include letters from everyone. More can't hurt! Best of luck.

We married, just the 2 of us and didn't send any letters or blessings in from our family or friends. Just an explanation as to why we chose this way. If you are going to send in letters you are probably fine without notarizing them.
