When sending in birth certificates, marriage certificate, and passport copies with our application, do they need to be notarized copies? Or just regular photocopies are ok??

If they are all in English photocopies are ok. If they are in another language then they need to be translated and notarized.

I would also suggest Color copies.

Any Certificate that is not in English or French then you need translated and Notarized Copy along with regular Photocopy of Original.
You can send other just regular Photocopies unless it is instructed in country Specific Information Guide.

Quoted from Document Checklist IMM 5491E Date Apr-24-2015
Supporting documents must be in English or French. If they are not, send a certified
translation with a copy of the originals.

Sweet! No trip to see a notary required.
Photocopier, here I come.

Thanks.

What nationality is the applicant? I ask as there are some applicants that are required to send only ORIGINAL certificates and not copies, such as Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate.

Please check country specific instructions to be sure what the requirements are.

As other have said normally copies are sufficient however it depends on the applicants nationality.

I agree, better be sure.
Using myself as example: I'm from Brazil. Cic don't ask for the originals, but they ask for notarized copies and certified translations of everything.
Take Chistoph100's advice and check your country specific guide.

We used black and white photocopies, no problem.

Me too.
When a coloured copy is needed, it's written on the form or guide.
CSQ asks specifically for a coloured photocopy of the passport.

My wife is from the Philippines and we required many ORIGINAL documents/certificates. We also needed many of our documents that were translated to English from Thai to be authenticated. Once again check your own needs to be sure you get things right. Anything you do that is not correct can cause delays in your application.
