I am a dual citizen, my wife is a US citizen and I will be sponsoring her via the inland route after we arrive in Canada this September.
Since she will be entering Canada as a tourist do we have to import her car to Canada? We still have a loan on it (under mine and mother in laws name but wife is the one that drives it) We calculated that we can pay it off six months after arriving in Canada so we were wondering if she can continue driving it there since she will only have a US drivers license and US car insurance (Geico) until the inland spousal sponsorship is done.
We plan on transferring the title to my wife’s name soon as we pay it off (6 months) and import it once she receives her PR inland (approximately 13 months)
1. Can we avoid importing it when we arrive this year since my wife will be the one driving it in Canada on a visitors visa (starting the process for inland sponsorship 1-3months after arriving) and will only be holding US driver’s license
2. Can I sometimes drive the car too if I am a Canadian/US citizen but keeping my US driver’s license for as long as I am legally allowed to in Alberta before surrendering it for a Canadian license (I had one which already expired last year so will only be renewing)
3. Can she drive the car for the entire duration of the sponsorship process or only for the 6 months that her US passport allows her to legally stay as a visitor?
