Installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, testing and repairing industrial electrical controls and equipments are all taken care of by industrial electricians. Primary employers of skilled workers of the NOC list occupation “industrial electrician” are electrical contractors, maintenance department of plants, factories, shipyards, mines and other such industrial establishments.
Electrician (shipyard), industrial electrician, mine electrician, marine electrician, plant maintenance electrician, mill electrician, plant electrician and industrial electrician apprentice are the job titles that qualify under this occupation.
Before we move onto discuss the duties that you are expected to fulfill as an industrial electrician, it makes perfect sense to know if you can qualify through the employment requirements of this occupation:
•Secondary school completion
•Completion of an industrial electrician apprenticeship program (4-5 years), or an experience of more than five years in the same trade along with the completion of some college, industry or school courses in the industrial electrician equipments is normally required for the eligibility of trade certification
•Industrial electricians must have trade certification in Yukon, Quebec and Prince Edward island and it is voluntary in Labrador, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland
•Industrial electricians with relevant educational qualification also need to take the easily available, Interprovincial trade certification (Red Seal)
•Trade certification is available for the marine electricians but in New Brunswick, this is voluntary
•Trade certification is available for mine electricians, which is voluntary in the province of Nova Scotia
Please note that you cannot escape the Red Seal trade certification, if you desire to have interprovincial mobility. As regards the duties you are entitled to perform under this occupation, you can read them below:
•Reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, electrical code specifications and drawings to determine the layout of installations of industrial electrical equipment
•Installation, examination, replacing or repairing switch boxes, electrical wiring, conduits, coaxial cable assemblies, feeders, lighting fixtures, receptacles and other such electrical components
•Testing electronic and electrical components and equipment for voltage, resistance, continuity and current
•Maintaining, repairing, installation and testing switchboard meters, reactors, regulators, switchgear and transformers
•Maintaining, repairing, testing and installation of generators, alternators, electrical motors, pneumatic and hydraulic electrical control systems and industrial storage batteries
•Troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining industrial, electronic and electrical control systems along with other associated devices
•Keeping maintenance records and conducting preventive sustenance programs
•You may also have to maintain, calibrate and install industrial instrumentation along with its related devices
