Hi everyone,

I am currently working as a postdoc in Canada and I applied under CEC (application submitted) with 1 year of CEC work experience.

I showed 1 year (part time) of foreign experience while doing my PhD from Germany under NOC 4012, as the letter states I worked 20 hours/week.

My question is, will the VO calculate the points or will he deduct the points while evaluating my application? I was awarded 25 points for this foreign work experience. In the offer letter, recommendation letter, and letter from university it states that I was working as a research associate until 2017.

Thank you

Not enough info. Part-time work is eligible, but it is pro-rated, and by definition it takes longer than one year to meet the one year full-time equivalent (FTE) requirement.

At 20 hours per week, you would need to work 78 weeks to attain 1 year of FTE experience. If you only worked one year (52 weeks), you did not meet the one year minimum requirement, and so there would be no points awarded.

Thanks Jes_ON. I worked for 2 years 9 months as part time, so it came down to 1 year and a few months and I rounded it to 1 year as part time.

So, will CIC still consider this experience when I applied under CEC?

If it is correctly documented, why not?

BTW I realize you may be simplifying for the sake of discussion, but if you worked 20 hours per week for 2 years and 9 months, that is the FTE of 2 years...

Thanks Jes_ON for your response. I was confused because I read somewhere that you cannot get points for foreign work experience if you apply under CEC.

Yes for the sake of simplicity, I squeezed everything ;-) My bad. Thanks for the clarification about the 2 years. I guess for 1 and 2 years I get the same points = 25.

You would not have read that on any of the official information the IRCC website. Internet fora are full of misinformation, so ...

That is absolutely true : )

That's true. Internet is now a place to get confused :p

I found this on CIC website

To be considered under the Canadian Experience Class:

You cannot count work experience you gained while enrolled as a full-time student. Your work experience must have been gained while on a valid work permit, such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit.

You must have gained the equivalent amount of experience as someone who worked full-time for at least one year (1,560 hours) in the three years before you submit your Express Entry profile.

And then I read this, which resulted in confusion -

It is correct that foreign work experience obtained during a period of study (even if enrolled in full-time studies) is eligible for foreign work experience points under Express Entry’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Foreign work experience completed while studying is also eligible work experience for the purpose of the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program.
The restriction that work experience must not coincide with full-time studies is only relevant to the Canadian Experience Class Program and the points awarded for Canadian work experience under Express Entry’s CRS.

The above information refers to ELIGIBILITY under the CEC class, not the CRS points of express entry (which applies to all classes under express entry). Two different things.

RE Work experience gained as a student not being eligible, that refers to work experience IN CANADA, not foreign work experience.

And then I read this, which resulted in confusion -

It is correct that foreign work experience obtained during a period of study (even if enrolled in full-time studies) is eligible for foreign work experience points under Express Entry’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The restriction that work experience must not coincide with full-time studies is only relevant to the Canadian Experience Class Program and the points awarded for Canadian work experience under Express Entry’s CRS.

These two points are not contradictory, the devil is in the details. Again, work experience IN CANADA is excluded if it is done under a study permit. Does not apply in the least to foreign work experience.

Let´s go back to the basics. There is a two-step application process.

First, you have to meet the eligibility criteria of one of economic classes managed under express entry - FSW, CEC, FST... (This has nothing to do with CRS points). For CEC eligibility, you have to have one year of in-Canada skilled work experience (cannot be done on a study permit). Foreign work experience has zero relevance to eligibility under the CEC class.

Second, you have to be accepted into the pool of applicants through an expression of interest profile - you are assigned CRS points based on your profile (this is not ELIGIBILITY for a program). The CRS scoring system applies to all classes (FSW, CEC, FST). You can earn points for both Canadian and foreign work experience, regardless of what class you are applying under. The restrictions on eligible CANADIAN work experience still apply. The restrictions on CANADIAN work experience do not apply to foreign work experience.

Hi all,

Need help regards my Experiences and IELTS Score. I have 1 and 7 months Canadian experience under NOC LEvel B and 2 years foreigner work (India) experience under NOC level A.My IELTS Score is R-7.5, L-7.5, S- 6.5 and W 5.5. I have created my express entry profile and it's giving me CRS point 476.

My question: Can I still accept the ITA with this condition? My primary Noc code falls under level 'B'. Should my IELTS score need to meet the minimum requirement for foreigner work experience as I only have 5.5 in the writing which does not meet the Level A minimum criteria for IELTS?

Please help Me here............................. Thanks in Advance.

Did you get points for 1 year or 2 year Canadian Experience? I think you made a mistake somewhere because with that IELTS score, you won't be able to get 476 points. Do calculate properly and also be careful with the education. Enter what is written on your WES report like '2 or more degrees'

Hi,
In fact, considering my 2 years of Canadian experience, the system automatically updates my points after I create my profile. I know that ITAs will not be accepted until I have a full 2 years experience in Canada so will wait for 3 months.

My Profile details are as follow:

1. Education - Diploma and degree from India. WES - Secondary diploma and Degree
2 years of study in Canada

I have selected two and more degree option from the drop-down.

2. IELTS
R-7.5, L-7.5, S- 6.5 and W 5.5.

3.Work Experience
1 and 9 months Candian experience under NOC level - B
2 Years foreigner work experience Under NOC level - A

4. My brother has a PR card - got 15 points

Please help me I can use my foreigner experience here or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not? Please clarify your doubts so that we can respond with more than "yes, why not?"

I have 5.5 in writing task and my foreigner experience falls under level A. Should my IELTS score need to meet LEVEL A IELTS requirements to consider this foreigner experience? or I can still mention this experience in my profile as my primary NOC Code Level is B and It's met all the criteria for CEC.
