I'm getting conflicting information about birth certificates.
I was born in a village in Pakistan so birth certificates are almost impossible to come by.
I was told that i can go to a consulate office (Toronto, for example) and they will give me some sort of a document based on my passport details.

1. Is this true?
2. Will the document they give me be acceptable at CIC?

Has anyone done this?

Hey bro,

No the birth certificate document issued by Consulate general are not valid documents as they have just the information based on your passport. I sent those one and got e mail from Seattle office that these documents are not acceptable for the same reason listed above. So if you can't get your BC from Pakistan, then try to take Non Availability certificate from the municipality where you were born and also attach an affidavit mentioning all the details of your birth. This is what I did in India. I am not sure abt Pakistan how u guys do it. But I am sure there must be some sort of arrangment for issuing Non Availanily Certificate. NAC just mention the fact that a search has been made for the details of birth for Mr. XYZ and no records were found in so and so municipality....later you can made affidavits at any Notary public in Canada...

Hope this helps..

thanks dude.
but this is conflicting! i've heard people who have sent a birth certificate from the consulate and didn't hear any thing from CIC. your case is contrary! i wish someone authoritative would say it once and for all! i wish CIC could actually provide alternatives!
i was born at home, not in a hospital, in the early 80s. So, there was no real record keeping. this is most stressful and i'm just wasting time trying to get answers!

jsa:
thanks. can you tell me exactly what your letter from the consulate indicates? and what documents i need to bring with me to my consulate? i'd appreciate that. i've been trying to call CIC for hours but just can't get through.

back on topic.

so I called CIC and the dude told me that if you don't have a traditional birth certificate, what CIC is looking for is every effort on your part to prove your identity. so, it's a case by case analysis--the letter from the consulate may work or it may not. he suggested i write a letter explaining that a birth certificate is not available and all the documents i've provided instead, and all the steps i took to confirm my identity.

it would be awesome if someone here could share how they supplemented their application if they didn't have a birth certificate (in addition to jsa!)

For my spouse, i could not get the birth certifcate, i took letter from Consulate General of India, Toronto, and submitted my application. Till now, no objections received for that. Fingers crossed.
