I'm gonna apply sponsorship PR for my wife, but we don't know what to answer "Have you ever used any other name (nickname, maiden name, alias, etc.)?" for her.

This is because she has a name that is informally used between family and friends but never been registered anywhere. However, that's the only name I've used in all our chats and emails for long, which are gonna be used as part of the evidence for our relationship in the application.

What's the best way to avoid any confusion?

Please help; thanks.

That's a nickname. She should include it.

Thanks amikety.

But I think the name that goes there as the answer should've at least been registered somewhere (like people's nicknames that sometimes show up in their passports); does it make sense? Otherwise, what would be the point of even mentioning it from the applicant's point of view (let's consider a general application, not the sponsorship one)? We can mention the name for this application, but then should we explain more that the name hasn't been registered anywhere, or there is no need?

No, it doesn't have to be registered. A nickname is an unofficial name you go by/are called in everyday life.

I also go by a nickname and listed it.

You pretty much answer your question when you mentioned the nickname is in the proofs. Would you want to confuse CIC between two different names? She should declare it so the agent processing your file is prepared to see her as "Nickname" and doesn't get confused.
