Hi...I am a US Citizen and my fiancee is a Canadian Citizen. We are trying to decide which would be easier, me going to Canada and getting citizenship there or him coming down here. I am currently a college student going for my Liscensed Vocational Nursing Degree and we are waiting till I graduate next year to act on what we are going to do. I have read about not being able to work in the Medical field until I am approved and since I will have just graduated, I'm afraid that I will not be able to find a job in Canada. So he has offered to live here with me instead. I want whatever is going to be easiest for both of us. I have read about the Fiancee Visa that we have here in the US so I am wondering if maybe that would be the better choice. If anyone can help me with any of these details I would greatly appreciate it. It would help decide what needs to be done in the next year. Thank you so much.

Fiance visa is meant for fiances of US citizens who are overseas to enter the United states and are required to get married within 90 days of entry to the US. Fiance visa is few months faster than the spouse but not always. Depends on your personal plans but I always considered processing immigration for a spouse to be a better deal than a fiance in terms of $$ and time.

As far as you moving to Canada you can do a common law < will need to prove you lived together for 1 yr> or a spouse sponsorship <after you get married>.

The main difference between the US and Canada is if you do fiance visa then it's a 2 steps process to get him a US permanent residence while for Canada it's one step process either common law or spouse sponsorship will give you a Canada permanent residence.

So, my next question would be how difficult would it be for me to get a permit to work in the medical field since I will have just graduated from Nursing School and will have no experience?

If your fiancee is readily employable in the States, I'd go the route of the fiance visa -- which I hear can go quite quickly, whereas the visa to Canada (even the quicker spousal visa) can take a longer time.

As you suspect, it might be difficult for you to get innediate employment in your field in Canada.

The US also has a financial requirement for the sponsor (for 2 people, the sponsor needs to make 18,212 in 2009), whereas Canada does not (in family class spousal/common-law)
