What are my options for the interim 3 months (ish) between landing and acceptance of health coverage? Can i get cover with a uk based insurer on say backpackers insurance or Canadian insurer or both? How easy is the process to gain coverage?

Advice appreciated!

Thanks

Assume you are an immigrant landing in Alberta, you can have immediately provincial healthcare coverage once you go to the registry in person. If you want extra coverage, you can go for a UK based insurer or Canadian insurer or both.

I will be landing in Ontario, I understand it takes a few months to be eligible for healthcare is this the case?

You'll need private emergency medical coverage for exactly 3 months from your landing as PR in Ontario.

It's incredibly easy to get a policy, in most cases can be done entirely online. Here's one site that compares a bunch of policies/rates, and there are many more similar ones: https://www.kanetix.ca/travel-visitors-to-canada

If you are settling in Ontario, I recommend to get this insurance from a Canadian company as it will be easier to deal with claims vs going through a UK company.

Be careful when selecting a policy that's not explicitly designed for new immigrants, especially if you are looking at cover from the UK. They may require that you are returning to the UK, as a round trip.

The best way to go is to get a policy from a Canadian company. They are easier to deal with on a spot and the claims can be made a lot faster- in many cases you can request the company to cover your costs directly as opposed to waiting to be reimbursed.

What you'll need is a Visitors to Canada policy that will cover you for medical care, hospitalization etc. You can look up up and see which suits you better

You can have 3 months insurance cover from a Canadian company till you get your ohip card and if you require any help in getting rates let me know

Thanks for your feedback guys, I have looked a lot at the Kanetix site and its a case of making sure I get the right coverage for the right timescale.

Does anyone have any other links for insurance companies they have used?

Also from a coverage point of view how far does 50k go if I really needed it in Canada, I am 28 fit and healthy (ish) so hopefully wont!

Cheers

Let's say 50k is about a week in an hospital, could be a little less though as it depends on your condition. But it should be enough for some minor services ;D

You may take a look at other insurance companies if you click here - New Immigrants Insurance.

Hi,
sorry to hijack this post
I was wondering how much would a 1 year insurance cost for a parent 62 years old with hemophilia condition?

Thanks

Get a quote from BestQuote Travel Insurance Agency to find the lowest rate (they have a few more policies than the other price comparison websites, and their quote presentation makes it easier to compare prices/policy features/benefits:

https://www.bestquotetravelinsurance.ca/visitors-to-canada-insurance

There is a policy there ($100,000 with $0 deductible) for $1971.00 that has only a 120 day stability period, and no specific exclusions regarding hemophilia. That's your best bet.
