Hi All,

I am posting on behalf of my friend. She did her soft landing in Sep 2020. Her PR Card was issued with expiry date of Oct 2025. However, her card got lost and she applied for replacement card. The replacement card was issued with the expiry date of Oct 2026. As per my knowledge, PR is initially given for 5years. The original card was expiring after 5 years only. The replacement card is expiring in 2026, which makes it 6 years. Does it mean that she got the PR for 6 years? Or it is for 5 years only?

As the name suggests "Permanent Residence" is permanent. There is no time limit on it. It does not expire.

It can be terminated, such as it is when a PR becomes a citizen, or when the PR is the subject of an enforceable Removal Order for inadmissibility. But again PR status does not expire.

PR cards are generally issued for five years from date of issuance, with some exceptions for which a one year card is issued.

Note, for example, the date a PR card is issued or the date it expires has NO relevance in calculating the PR's compliance with the PR Residency Obligation. Thus, for example, the later date that your friend's PR card expires does not give your friend until October 2026 to spend 730 days in Canada. After the fifth year anniversary of the date your friend landed in September 2020, that is after September 2025, RO compliance will be based on days in Canada (RO requires at least 730) within the previous five years, for any day the calculation is done. Before then, up to September 2025, to comply with the RO your friend needs to be able to be in Canada at least 730 days before that fifth year anniversary of the date of landing (in practical terms this means not being outside Canada for more than 1095 days during those first five years).

PR is permanent. The PR card expiray date has nothing to do with her PR.

She needs to meet her RO and the date is calculated from the day that she landed in Canada (soft landing as you said). The PR card expiry date doesn't change anything.

Just think of a PR are like a passport. If you lose your passport and apply for a new one the new passport will be valid for 10 years from the day you applied. The expiry date will not be the same as the passport you lost that you applied for the year before.
