Hello all
I am new immigrant who is planning to move with family in few weeks.
Kindly advise in regards to the insurance system in brief and what should I do from day 1?

Thanks

apply for health card in the province you're settling in.

But just in case you should get insurance for the first 3 months you're staying

Hello
You mean for the first three months I should het insured from my home country with an insurance covers Canada ?

Check the province health benefit guide, it should tell you the range of coverage. I have no experience in this.

Based on your previous posts, you are moving to SK. If this is the case, you will be eligible for provincial healthcare from the day you land. Simply go and apply for your healthcard and you can access healthcare for free. You should note that medicines, dental and most optical services are not covered by provincial healthcare, and you may wish to consider private insurance for these services.

Depending on the province you are going to live in, healthcare system requirements vary. In BC, ON, NB and Quebec there is an approximately 3 months waiting period (in BC it is a little different however) before you can start receiving provincial insurance benefits.

In case you are settling in one of the mentioned provinces, you may want to consider getting yourself and your family insured with a private insurance policy for New Immigrants / Visitors to Canada. Such insurance covers the costs for medical emergency treatment and will be a good thing to have until you get the provincial insurance coverage.

You can click on the following link and calculate a personal quote - Medical Insurance for New Immigrants

Hope it helps :D
