I have been reading about the new citizenship act that might pass sometime this year.
I currently have a permanent resident application pending (it will probably be approved in a few months). If the new citizenship law passes, will it be retroactive to people who are currently working on their PR time? Or will it affect people as soon as they become PR? Basically, I want to know if because I applied before this law passes, will I have to follow the 3/4 year requirement or the 4/6 year requirement?

thanks!

I do not think there will be any retroactive provision/exemption
If the law passes and you apply for Citizenship (Not PR), you are subjected to this law
Since you can apply only after 3 years for Citizenship, you will be on 4/6 count (unless the bill is scrapped)

Ok thanks, I was just wondering if it was effective immediately for everyone doing their PR time, or if they made a cut off date where people who get PR before that date are still on the 3/4 year deal. This is such a bummer :(

Thanks!

That is the reason why even people who will be applying for Citizenship in June 2014 are worried...

Yeah I feel sorry for them too :(
thanks for the reply!
