Who is eligible for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition?

it's been less than four years since you left high school
your parents' gross income is $160,000 or less
you’re a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person
you’re an Ontario resident
Will the grant be retroactive?
No. The NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant will not be retroactive to semesters starting before January 2012.
When will the new tuition grant start?
The grant will be available for the January 2012 semester.
How much money will I receive through this grant?
For the semester starting January 1, 2012, the grant will be up to $800 for students in university and college degree programs, and up to $365 for students in college diploma and certificate programs. This amount is for one semester, covering the second half of this school year.
Starting in September 2012, the grant for full-time university and college students pays:
$1,600 a year for students in a degree program at a public college or university
$730 a year for students in a certificate or diploma program at a public college
Will I get my grant money in time to pay for my tuition?
Students who receive OSAP can expect to receive their grant by direct deposit in late January or early February. Students who apply online can expect to receive their grant within four to six weeks after they apply and we receive the signed pages from the student and their parent(s).
For September 2012, we will work with colleges and universities to have the 30% off tuition deducted before students receive their bill for tuition.
Student Application and Granting Process
What is my deadline for applying for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition?
You need to apply by March 31, 2012, to be eligible for the January 2012 semester payment of the new grant.
How do I apply?
If you receive OSAP:

If you don’t receive OSAP:
If you don’t receive OSAP, you need to apply online. To apply, you’ll need three things:

information from Line 150 in your parent(s)’ 2010 Canadian Income Tax Return(s).
To complete the application:
Go to ontario.ca/30off
Register for an OSAP Access Number
Submit the online application form
Print the two signature pages — one for you and one for your parents.
Mail or fax the two signature pages to:
Student Financial Assistance Branch,

Fax: (807) 343-7278
Important! The deadline to apply is March 31, 2012.
If I am attending school in the summer of 2012, will I be eligible for a tuition grant?
Yes, if you are eligible. If you receive OSAP for your summer term, you’ll be considered for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition automatically.
If you don’t receive OSAP, you need to apply online at ontario.ca/30off
If you’re enrolled in a summer term, the deadline to apply is 30 days before the end of your study period. For example, if your term runs from May 5 to August 15 submit your application for the tuition grant by July 16, 2012.
What do parents need to do to help their children receive the grant?
First, parents will have to ensure that they have filed their 2010 Canadian tax returns.
The application for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant will ask for parental income information, which will be verified with the Canada Revenue Agency.
Parents need to provide information (Line 150) from their tax returns to their children, provide their social insurance numbers, and sign a consent form to allow their income to be verified with CRA.
These forms have to be mailed or faxed to the ministry by the March 31, 2012, application deadline.
Do I need to send in my signature form and my parent(s)’ signature form together?
No. You can send the two forms separately. We will match up your information and process your application when we receive both forms.
Mail or fax the signature pages to:
Student Financial Assistance Branch,
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,
PO Box 4500, 189 Red River Road, 4th Floor,
Thunder Bay, ON
P7B 6G9
Fax: (807) 343-7278
How will the grant be paid to me? If you receive OSAP, the grant will be deposited directly into your bank account. If you receive OSAP and do not have a direct deposit account on file, your cheque will be sent to the mailing address that you provided when you applied for OSAP.
If you don’t receive OSAP, your cheque will be sent directly to the mailing address that you provide on your application.
If I already get OSAP how will I know that I’m also getting the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition?
Eligible students will receive an email telling them that they will be automatically considered for the new grant. These students will receive a second email in mid-January, confirming the amount of grant they will receive.
Students can expect to receive their grant by direct deposit in late January or early February.
If OSAP needs more information from you to determine your eligibility for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant, you will be contacted directly.
How long will it take to receive my NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition?
You can expect to receive your grant within four to six weeks after you apply and we receive the signed pages from you and your parent(s).
Once your application is completed online and we have received the signed forms from you and your parent(s), we will verify your parent(s) income and that you’re enrolled full time in an eligible college or university program.
Can I get help if I have trouble filling in my application form?
Yes. You can call our hotline at 1-888-449-4478.
The phone centre will be open from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm from Monday to Friday and 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, until the end of January.
You can also send us a question through Twitter or Facebook
Do I have to complete my application all at one time?
No. Your application form will be available online for 45 days from the time you start it. If you are missing information or are interrupted, you can save the form and then return to complete it.
If my parent(s) has not filed their 2010 Canadian Income Tax Return, can I still get the tuition grant?
In most cases where parents have Canadian sources of income, you won’t be eligible. To be eligible for the grant we must verify your parent(s) 2010 income with Canada Revenue Agency. This requires that your parent(s) have filed their 2010 tax return(s).
For students whose parents derive all their income from outside Canada, the application includes a place to write in the level of income received from other countries. In these cases, students may need to provide additional supporting documentation with their application.
For students in very exceptional circumstances that do not allow them to get their parent (s)’ consent to verify income, they may send a letter to the ministry explaining the exceptional circumstances, and requesting an exemption. This should be sent, along with your application to:
Director - Student Financial Assistance Branch,
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,
PO Box 4500, 189 Red River Road, 4th Floor,
Thunder Bay, ON
P7B 6G9
Fax: (807) 343-7278
If I received an Ontario Access Grant this year, am I eligible for the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition?
If you applied for OSAP, we will automatically consider you for the tuition grant. If you received an Ontario Access Grant to help with tuition, the tuition grant will be reduced by the amount of Ontario Access Grant you received for that term.
The NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant doesn’t cover 30 per cent of my tuition. I thought everyone was getting a 30 per cent cut in their tuition.
The new grant is based on the average undergraduate arts and science university and college tuition in Ontario. Because it is based on average tuition, there will be some students for whom the grant does not equal 30 per cent of their tuition.
Exclusions & Exceptions
I receive support from the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). Will the NEW 30% Off Ontario Tuition affect my funding?

In addition, universities in Ontario offer a wide range of institutional aid to students in high-cost programs, including many grants that do not have to be paid back.
I am a mature student. Why aren’t I eligible?
The purpose of the tuition grant is to help students make a smooth transition from high school into postsecondary studies. Part of this assistance includes the Ontario Student Opportunity Grant which limits their annual repayable debt to $7,300.
