Hi,

So here's my situation. I applied for Citizenship in December 2013. I got a RQ and the beginning of March and had it back to them end of March. 2 weeks ago I got a date to write the exam on the 2nd of June. Now the problem.....

I am currently in Thailand taking a course to become a professional Scuba diving instructor. This course takes several months. Family back in Canada who were watching my mail only just told me about this letter so there is no chance I can make the date. I'm going to call and ask to change it but how long can I delay this date?

I still have several months of my course left here in Thailand, but putting it on hold is no problem. If I am able to get a new date for the exam a few weeks from now I could easily fly back to do the exam, but what happens after the exam? Is it simply being asked to come for an oath a few weeks later? Or is there anything else that they could ask for? If I'm booking a flight to Canada I need to know how long to stay as I have to come back to Thailand to finish this course, and it seems a waste of money to fly to Canada for a few days for the exam, then back to Thailand, and then back to Canada a few weeks later.

Any advice on the timeline much appreciated so I can get some flights booked.

Thanks

You can't ask for a specific exam date - CIC will just give you a new one and contact you by mail again to let you know when it is. The oath could be a few weeks later - or a few months later. Once again, you really have no control.

I strongly suggest that you can come and do the test if you miss the test
than you will be long haul of waiting and than you will regret. Matter of
few hundred dollars for tickets and few hours of journey when ever CIC call you
come and finish the job.. test and oath now a days 2-3 months apart..
after your test you may go and back when they call for oath...

decision is yours ???? in this form people are waiting for almost 50 months..

they miss the test...

You should come back to Canada and give the test. That's what i highly recommend.

If you reschedule it and then after 4-8 weeks, you get notified about second test and in that case if the letter is delivered late or just before the test and if you can't make it that time to Canada then your application would be closed. Why do you want to take a chance?

Once you complete the test and you can return to Thailand as there would be waiting period of 1-3 months (on average) for oath. Then once you get letter for oath, you can come back again to Canada for oath.

You need to decide what your priorities are.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I can't make the current date. Even if I left tomorrow I can't guarantee being in Montreal in time. I am on a very small remote island at the moment and it would take me 24 hours just to get to Bangkok to catch a plane back to Canada.

I spoke to CIC today and they made a note on my file and said I have 30 days to write to the office in Montreal explaining why I can't make the test and asking for a new date, along with proof of why I can't make it. I will send this in a couple of days along with a photocopy of my thai visa and entry stamps plus a letter from the dive shop I'm taking the course with. Hopefully they can give me a new appointment with a few weeks notice. I'll also check online everyday to see when they issue the new appointment so I can book flights immediately. Then I will come back here to finish course and fly back for the Oath provided my application is successful.

It's just annoying that I put this application in about 19 months ago, and the very time they chose to ask me to come in for exam is the couple of months I booked to learn diving. This is a career break I've had planned for about 10 years.

Thanks again.
