Hello all! First I would like to thanks everyone who helped me on my last 2 topics, wich was about my american boyfriend moving to Canada.

He's been here since October 24th, we are now looking into the process of me sponsoring him (I'm a Canadian citizen). His six months allowed visit time ends on April 24th 2016.
At first we planned on living together for a year to be considered common law, that would make the process a bit too long and complicated from what we've read. The only other option is getting married. We have more than enough proof to show that our relationship is genuine.
I am currently supporting him, as he doesn't have a lot of money and education (wich I don't mind). Is this going to cause a problem in the whole process ? I can afford to pay everything for him, it's just that I've read multiple times that one has to show that they are able to support themselves to an officer.
Also, if he wants to stay longer in Canada as a visitor he needs to apply to extend his stay, currently from what I'm reading the processing time is 121 days, so he should apply now ?
The objective right now is for him not to leave Canada once his 6 month is up, but we're not sure on wich option is the best..if someone could help us it would be greatly appreciated!!

Happy holidays :D

You should move over to the Family Class Sponsorship forum.

Since he's already in Canada, he just needs to apply to extend his visitor status before it expires in April. He can even apply online a day before it expires and still have authorization to remain in Canada, while awaiting a decision. This is known as Implied Status.

He should mention that his desire to extend his stay, is to establish the cohabiting requirement to be deemed Common-Law. For this reason, he should request a one year extension (even though he only really needs another 6 months). Most Americans seem to have little trouble with such a request.

You can include a letter explaining that you are supporting him while he `visits' you in Canada and are prepared to continue to to so for the duration of his stay.

If marriage is a viable option, he could apply for sponsorship as soon as you are married.

Good luck!
