Need help with translating document and Affadavit clarification

Hi,

is it sufficient to get a Certified Translator to translate a birth cert and have him stamp his certified translator stamp? And then get him to write a statement stating contents of translation are true translation and sign it?
Or his needs to have this witnessed by notary public?

I will be doing this in Australia. Have called a few translators and they won't do affidavits
I'm hoping to get more clarification on this.

Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document. Translators who are certified members in good standing of one of the provincial or territorial organizations of translators and interpreters of Canada do not need to supply an affidavit.

Certified translators won't do affidavits, because their stamp means they have already sworn their translations to be true. I had the same question when I was gathering the documents, so I called CIC to ask for clarification. The affidavit is required only if the translation of the document is done by a regular person (except family members - they are not allowed to translate documents for you, even if they do an affidavit). Let's say for example that my neighbor speaks English and German, I can ask him to translate a German document for me. In this case, after he translates it, he will go to a notary public and swear that whatever he translated it true and accurate.

So if you just go to a certified translator (also called a sworn translator) they will put their stamp on the translation and write something along these line: I certify this to be a complete, true and accurate translation of the documents presented to me.
This should be enough.


EDIT: Just a side note, I thought I would put this in here. When I did my translations, I contacted 2 translators in Canada ( I needed one for German and one for Romanian). I emailed them a scanned copy of the document, they translated it and sent everything back to me by regular mail. The price was pretty convenient to me (Eur > CAD) and the service was fast (less than a week).
The reason I decided to do that is because of this sentence " Translators who are certified members in good standing of one of the provincial or territorial organizations of translators and interpreters of Canada do not need to supply an affidavit." But I guess that was just my paranoia at work, because the CIC agent assured me I can translate everything here in Germany with a German certified translator.

Which translator in Canada did you use? Will they still accept it if I'm applying from Australia?

So as long as the translator I use has a certified translator stamp, I should be ok to use him?

Want to ensure I'm gathering all the required info and docs so no delay in application when I do send it in

I used two different translators, one for German to English and one for Romanian to English. Both were based in Ottawa.

If you use a certified translator, everything should be fine. My application is going good, just ordered the GCMS notes and everything seems to be on track. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't accept a translation, no matter where in the world the translator is based. As long as you do it with a certified translator.
