I have been granted open work permit to accompany my wife to Canada. she is give study permit. While I was checking IRCC website, I saw that it says I have to have medical insurance for the entirety of my stay or I might be refused entry. however, when I checked some websites that sell these insurances, none of them offered anything more than 6 months. what should I do with it? The information I got seems to be very confusing. Shouldn't we be given public health care? what am I supposed to do? can you explain in layman's terms?

Research more. I don't think you need medical insurance its for visitors and students. Which province are you landing? Contact the companies for more clarification.

Usually the Unis have collaboration with medical insurance companies and covers a student, but I maybe wrong. Haven't the Uni sent a welcome pack or something like that to do list before you arrive? Try to contact their student admin desk.

I live also in BC, you need to have private insurance for 3 months, as soon as you reach in BC apply MSP (bc healthcare) and after 3 months you can go to any DR in BC without any cost. But please make sure you have private insurance for 3 months.
