Hi everyone,

I recently obtained my US Green card while I had Canadian permanent residency since 2014, while I am living completely in US and never traveled to Canada except at the time of claiming the PR in 2014. Now I need to travel to Canada for work and my Canadian PR card is still valid while I see that US permanent residents need to apply for ETA before entering Canada and I have no idea what to use my Canadian PR or apply for ETA.

I understand that I didn't spend 3 years in Canada, I'll not be able to renew my Canadian PR but anyone has an idea if applying for ETA and using it with US-GC to enter Canada would be a problem or It's better to use the Canadian PR to enter?

Please help!

Thanks in advance!

As a PR, you aren’t eligible for an eTA. You will have to use your PR card to board commercial transportation. You may run into issues at the POE for not meeting RO for your PR and CBSA may start proceedings to revoke your PR status.

Thank you for your response and time!
Would it cause any trouble with entry in Canada?

Your guaranteed entry to Canada as a PR (unless you’ve commited some heinous crime somewhere). You may be asked if you want to renounce your PR status, which they usually allow entry after if you agree or, as mentioned, they will report you for not meeting RO and IRCC will start the revocation process. But until you renounce or your status is revoked, you can enter Canada.

Thank you so mucn for the information and time!

I just wanted to make sure if I understand your comment, that means after my entry in Canada as Canadian PR, they will ask me about not meeting the RO, I just wanted to make sure that I can enter Canada.

And no crime here at all, super clean background all my life ☺️

Thanks again!

They MAY ask about and report you for RO. Nothing is definite with CBSA. All depends on the officer you meet and their particular mood that day. You will be allowed into Canada, but you might have a short delay with immigration.
