Hi everyone! I am newly registered in this forum although I have been lurking around for quite a while. I have a situation and I am hoping that you guys can help me figure things out. This is with regard to my Canadian PR girlfriend sponsoring me as a conjugal partner. We have been together for 11 years and 6 months now. We are in a same sex relationship and we have an age gap of 10 years. We are from the Philippines. We have not lived together and we have managed to see each other quite a few times in those 11 years. We have exchanged a lot of letters, emails, phone calls. We have few pictures together and we have already introduced each other to our relatives. We have money remittances but we do not have any joint bank accounts, joint ownership of durable goods, etc. She recently got her PR, a little less than a year. Do we have a shot? Thank you very much for all your opinions.

Yes I think you have a shot - go for it! You can find a lot of friends in this thread http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/manila-philippines-time-line-conjugal-partner-male-to-male-female-to-female-t51925.0.html

Thanks Steph. My only concern is that we have very little proof of financial interdependence. We are going to build on that beginning today but unfortunately we cannot create a joint bank account since we are physically apart. Thanks again..

If you explain that in your application, they would understand. Some banks are finicky about that, whereas some others aren't. If you want to get a joint bank account, I'd ask a few banks :)

We had luck getting a joint account at BDO, they didn't ask very many questions, even though supposedly Philippine banks won't give foreigners an account, and we're not even married. We're opposite sex though, I'm not sure how they would react to same sex getting a bank account.. people over there can be pretty mean about that. I saw something recently on my Royal Bank that I could add anyone to my Visa card. Hmm I thought about that! But I don't want the bill :p Also if you open an RRSP in Canada you can name anyone as your beneficiary if you die.

Would it be possible to travel to a country where you can be legally married? From the way you describe your relationship, it might be tough to do conjugal (they are normally pretty difficult) without some of the "marriage like" characteristics present. You have just written a paragraph but it sounds more like dating from reading it.

After 11 years of being together? There's only 11 countries in this world supporting same sex marriage and none in Asia. All require visas for a Filipino and it's really hard for a Filipino to get a visa to go anywhere.

I saw the 11 years but a VO might think that since both of them are from the Philippines, why didn't they ever live together? There may be an explanation that has to do with separation because of work, study, etc. But from what was written, that doesn't look good. Conjugal means marriage like. I don't see the "marriage like" in the 11 years they've been together just from what was written. Length of relationship is an important factor BUT not the only one.

I can't speak for them and I'm not an expert on their culture, but from what I noticed it's just not that culturally accepted to be a same sex couple over there. It sounds like they were not even living in the same province.

We have been on a long distance relationship. She had to go to Indonesia and stayed there for 5 years. She went back home here in the Philippines for 2 months before she flew again to Canada and have been there for 5 years again. She came home for 6 weeks for a visit but had to come back to Canada to serve her PR-Citizenship. She is the sole provider of her family that is why she could not afford to stop working. I was still a student when our relationship started, we have an age gap of 10 years.

And yes we are from two different provinces. Distance travel is between 8 to 10 hours. May I know the BDO branch where I can try our luck? Thanks guys for your opinions. Really appreciate all of your comments.

You and your bf were physically present when you applied? It would be impossible in our case since we are physically apart :(

Yes we were both there. I think they didn't ask any questions to us because they probably thought the white girl has money :( I looked into adding him to my bank account in Canada but he had to be here too. I could possibly add him to my visa card.
