Need Help! Answers pleaase.

Hi. I am an American Citizen married to a Canadian citizen. I have been here in Canada for 3 years already and my paperwork to become a permanent resident is stilllll in process. They are asking for stuff over and over and its so frustrating. I just reapplied for an extension so that means Im still a visitor until I become a resident. The rules are I am only allowed to attend a course or school for 6 months or less. I know I can apply for a study permit but they are going to request medical and thats more funds. I would think that it would be easier to wait for my residency goes through but Its taking to long. I attended a school for 6 months last year and I want to go back to graduate now.Can I do so by continuing to go to classes and graduate this year? or should I just stop going ?? Can I get in trouble? Has anyone had these experiences before? MY husband argues with me about wanting me to go to school but he doesn't understand that. Can someone tell me their experience with this? And I am still attending right now. Should I continue? Thank you.

You need to stop attending school immediately until you are legally allowed to do so. As you yourself said, as a visitor, you are only allowed to attend a course / program that is six months or less. By continuing to attending school you are in violation of that rule and in violation of your visitor status. Yes - there's always a possibility you could be caught and told to leave Canada.

Thank you for your reply. Idk what to do about this. My husband thinks its no big deal to attend classes but he has to understand that I'm taking a huge risk. Why didnt the school inform me of this? Why would they put me down as a international student knowing the program is more than 6 months without asking for a permit? What if the school is free? Thank you.

It's not up to the school to verify your status and determine if you are allowed to attend - this is entirely your responsibility. It's really up to you whether you take the risk or not. No one here can make that decision for you. And no - it doesn't matter if the school is free. If you have visitor status, then you need a study permit if you are going to be taking a course/program/diploma/degree that is longer than six months in duration. Otherwise you are studying illegally. The rules are very clear.
