Hi Everyone,

I am international Student and have recently been accepted for admission to the MEng program at UBC. Although, I am yet to secure an study permit since I have just applied for the permit last week. For the past few days I have been reading the CIC web-pages regarding the 'canadian experience class' as i am interested in becoming a PR later on. However, there are few queries which needs to be answered. Therefore, I would appreciate replies from any one who has experienced or have knowledge on similar issue and can provide me legitimate solutions to the following problems:

1. As we are aware that MEng is a one year masters degree course but however could be extended upto 16 months. As per CIC in order to qualify for 'canadian experience class' one needs to have at least two years of 'Canadian post-secondary education'. And for a exceptional case "a one-year Master’s program and an additional year of education, obtained in Canada, before admission into the one-year program (for a total of two years)". Now my question is, after the completion of the current MEng program, if I enroll for a second MEng or MAsc program do I qualify for the 'canadian experience class' apart for the 1 yr work experience. Or does it have to be a one year Canadian post-secondary education before enrolling in to the current MEng program.

2. The UBC MEng program has coop option within it. Does this duration of coop count towards the academic length of the program or not?

3. Thirdly, i'd like to know if anyone has ever transferred from a Meng program to a MAsc program or is it possible to do so? I know i am suppose to talk abt this with my supervisor at UBC but before asking him i would like to know if it is possible or not?

Thank you Every one for your time.

Hi - I think this is confusing for some of us - are you already an international student (have you already studied in Canada?), or you WILL BE an international student (have not yet started any education in Canada?)

Hi,
thanks for your interest. Well, according to your comment "I Will be" an international student. I am currently residing in UAE and have already applied for the study permit. Provided that I receive the study permit on time, then i will be arriving to Canada by early September 2012.

Hello,
Please check with your International Advisor about course duration. As far as co-op is concerned, yes its part of your Masters program unless stated in the program as without co-op.

Thanks Calgary_Man for your reply, on my admission offer letter it is mentioned that "Minimum Expected duration of program: 12 months" and on the program website it is mentioned that the program can be extended up to 16months.

well, you could do a 2nd master's degree (not certificate), that would qualify.

there are also the Provincial Nominee Programs for students who have graduated from an approved program in a given province. Links to the BC programs are here:
