Name change from maiden to married

Okay, so I need advise on the best way to go about this.

When we applied, I used my maiden name 'cos I haven't changed it since i got married. Now, we are just waiting for the Passport request.

Starting a new life in Canada, I will like to have my PR and all my Canadian documents in my married name from the very beginning. So, I am thinking of having my embassy in the US do a change of name in my passport (i won't need to get a new passport. They'd just sign a page in the passport after giving them a copy of the marriage cert saying "you are now Mrs so and so..." and then stamp it. so it's still the same passport).

That way, when the passport request comes, I be sending the same passport used initially, but with a stamp showing my married name...

I know I can do it after I get to Canada, but I'd rather start afresh...

Anyone?

I did a legal name change after I did the medicals (in fact, even after I received the PPR.) It was much less of a big deal than I thought it would be. Name change took like 4 weeks to get certified from the court and US State Dept. got me a new passport in 4 days (wow!) -- they won't amend passports in the US anymore for name changes (but this doesn't seem to apply to you since your post suggests that you're not an American citizen.) My issue was a little different in that I was correcting the spelling of a French family name to proper French (I immigrated to Quebec, so it seemed fitting.)

In any case, as regards Canada, their attitude (and I asked them/notified them via email before I did any of this) was roughly: as long as it's you, we will issue the visa to whatever passport/name you have when you send us your passport, as long as the name is registered in the passport. For good measure, I sent them a copy of the certified name change order from the judge.

Good luck.

Hi edgy555,

thank you so much for responding and for sharing your experience. I am glad to know that it was much less of a big deal. That puts my mind at ease.

I just received my PPR last week, so i better get cracking if I want to get this change done before sending my passport.

I hope you are loving Quebec! I would definitely visit there (by God's grace) when I finally move. I am taking french classes and all, so looking forward to actually using it...

Merci!
