Hi! I recieved citizenship back in September, but got married in late October. My citizenship certificate has my maiden name but I plan on assuming
my partners last name (Ontario). Would I need to get a replacement citizenship certificate with my husbands last name since the rest of my documents will
be updated with the change?
Thanks!

Not unless you want to. Getting passport updated should be sufficient.

Yes i think so, better to do, because if you plan to get the new password you will need a new certificate to match.

Assuming you mean passport, this is not true. You can go to the passport office with the basis for name change (eg marriage certificate, change of name court decree) and one other document in new name (eg driver's license, health card) to show that this is now the name you use.

This is VERY clear on government websites: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/change-name.html#adults

Because we’re changing the name on your passport, you also need to include

a document explaining why you have a new last name.
For example, it could be because of
a relationship change
a legal name change, a court order or an adoption order
the reclamation of your Indigenous name
supporting ID(opens in a new tab) that shows the new name
your proof of citizenship
It can have either your new name or your previous name.
For most people, after they get the passport, they will never use the citizenship certificate again. And if they had to for some obscure reason, as above: original with old name plus evidence of change of name sufficient to show that [new name person] is a citizen. So no pressing need to update it.

That said, if people WANT to get the new certificate, by all means. But PLEASE get the updated passport first. To change the citizenship certificate due to name change can take many months, and you have to send in the original, meaning no way to acquire a new passport until the updated certificate arrives.

Thanks! This is what I thought! I haven't applied for my first Canadian passport yet, but I assume it won't be an issue as I will take my citizenship certificate, marriage certificate and ID with the updated last name too.
