I don't have my birth certificate available but I saw on the Indian Consulate website that they can issue it based on the passport. Will it be good for the Canadian immigration requirement?Has anyone done this before?

You can apply @ New Delhi

Q.What is the procedure for getting a Birth certificate ?

The Birth and Death Certificates in Delhi are issued by the Local Bodies namely MCD, NDMC, Delhi Cantonment Board within 7 days from the date of receipt of application from the applicant provided the birth /death has already been registered. Single copy of Birth & Death Certificate is given free of cost to the informant immediately after the registration procedure is completed. Additional copies of the Birth & Death certificate are also issued @ Rs.5/- per copy and on payment of Rs.2/- for search of the single entry in current year and Rs.2/- for every additional year for which the search is made. The certificates are issued from the registration centres/Zonal Offices of the local bodies.
Q. Where do I have to go and during which hours?

To the office of Sub-Divisional Magistrate in whose jurisdiction birth or death took place, during 9.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on any working day. Click Here to obtain the contact address of the SDM in whose jurisdiction in your colony lies.

arj4ur,

I applied for my and my spouse's Birth Certificate from New York Indian Consulate. It is accepted for Canadian Immigration (not for US GC though).
Its a fairly simple process-->we went to the NY Indian consulate around 9am -->Submitted the application/fee/passports and were told to collect our Birth Certificates after 3:30pm the same day. Thats it..!!
If you plan to send it through Mail/Post then it might take a couple of weeks i guess but you will have to send your passports.

Just go through the Indian Consulate website near to the place you live and fill up the required applications and take the docs required.

Note: While collecting the docs, make sure you collect your passports and check if your NAME/DOB/Place OB etc are correctly typed.

Good luck

arj4ur,

Another way of getting a document in lieu of birth certificate is to get a notarized affidavit from your parents about your actual DOB. This is much easier and faster.
