Here's the deal:
1. Last week my soon to be wife received the final letter from CIC asking documents to be sent to them to issue her PR Card. She has 60 days to get those docs to them. Her application so far has her maiden surname.
2. She and I are getting married next week. Her name change will take at least 3-4 months to be reflected on her passport.
3. We wanted to have her final docs sent before the marriage to avoid complications, but the Canada Post strike won't allow that. She applied from Europe. We cannot afford to send her documents to the overseas CIC office by courier.
Our tentative plan 8) :
Send in her application once the Canada Post strike is lifted (which is almost certain to happen in one way or the other within the next 60 days) with - no mention of the marriage. We will not apply to change the name on the passport until we receive the PR Card. Once we change the name on passport we will just carry the passport with married name, PR Card with maiden name, and marriage certificate. This will continue till we apply for her citizenship in 3 years at which point we will declare her married and send in the marriage certificates.
Now the questions:
1. Is it safe to travel overseas with the new passport, old PR card, and marriage certificate? Or are we legally required to change the surname on PR card as soon as passport reflects the change?
2. When we apply for her citizenship and send in her marriage certificate, is CIC likely to care about when the marriage took place and question as to why we didn't declare that at the time of applying for PR some 3 years prior?
Thanks for ANY suggestion you may have ;D
