Hi!

Guys, those of you who have contacted your local MPs to enquire about your cases, were you all asked to fill out a "consent form" or something similar?

If one MP doesn't ask for this form and starts giving out info about the file to you, does it mean they didn't really enquire?!

I found it weird when my friend told me this, because even when requesting caips the applicant still has to sign a consent form to give permission to the spouse and sponsor who is part of the file to order the caips, so how could a MP not need that consent form to enquire on an applicant's behalf ...

Looking forward to your replies, thank you :)

That's a very Q...I enquired with my local MP last week and interesting she didn't ask me to sign on any consent form. She just ask me to show my ID proof.

She also told me to get back to her in 2days to get some feedback and i called her twice she said she hasn't heard anything from VO...I am not sure whether she really send them an email. But finally i called her today and she wants me to come to her office again so that she can send email to VO again...not sure what's going on........

Read the operating procedures.

MPs or whoever in their office they delegate, do not need your permission to request info on your behalf as long as you're a constituent in their riding.

You however, if you are the sponsor requesting CAIPS notes for your spouse, will need written permission from your spouse - just signing the form.

Hi all. I contacted my MP's office and did not need to sign anything, gave them the information they needed to enquire on my behalf. so far they have helped me. I will be contacting again on tuesday as I need their assistance again..

Thank you everyone for the replies :) It was interesting to know, thanks!

I contacted my local MP and was asked to submit my consent form which I completed and faxed twice and emailed it as well. As usual they told me I can not get any information from them since my applicant's file is undergoing normal processing time in Damascus for permanent residence. He mentioned 15 months is the processing time in Damascus. The officer working for my MP also told me to contact him back at the end of the summer another 3 months which is when he can reply hmmm?? So I decided to send an email to another MP in my city..he told me to send him an email with the consent form attached to it which I did 3 days ago. Lets see if he will contact me back with any info.

If you are in Canada and asking an MP for assistance - a member of parliament - Federal consent is not required as a result of the Privacy Act. An MP can ask for information on your behalf from a Federal department as if he/she were you speaking directly to the department.

Privacy Act:

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/P-21/page-3.html#docCont

8. (1) Personal information under the control of a government institution shall not, without the consent of the individual to whom it relates, be disclosed by the institution except in accordance with this section.

(g) to a member of Parliament for the purpose of assisting the individual to whom the information relates in resolving a problem;

So any of those MPs asking for a release need to do their homework (or their assistant). Also, remember, the MP is not obligated to help or assist if requested to do so - it is their choice to do so or not.
