Hi Guys

I will be moving to Ontario next month after getting my PR through and i was wondering what options i have for getting an Ontario driving license. I only got my UK driving license at the end of April and so will only have had it for 2 months when i move over, now my original plan was to get an IDP and use it for a while, but, and i should have done more research and found this out, i don't believe i can do this as the IDP is only for visitors rather than permanent residents, is this correct?

I also don't believe i can do a straight exchange as you need 2 yrs driving experience to do this and i can only drive on my UK license for 60 days.

So i was wondering if anyone with more knowledge of this stuff than i have has any idea's or suggestions about what options i have at this point, if any, to avoid just starting the process again at the beginning when i get there.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you'll be doing graduated licensing. I'm so, so sorry.

Lots of resources online to help you, or stop by your local DriveTest facility (when you can) to be certain.

With a full UK license, you can exchange it in Ontario for a G2 license. A G2 license will allow you to drive alone so it's not like you are back to a learners. You would have a 1 year waiting period before you can get a full (G) license.

You are supposed to do this within 60 days of moving to Ontario.

I believe that it's a minimum of 12 months, not 2 years from G2 to G.

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

Since you mention the ability to get a G2 i went looking to see and its not made very clear...

On the Ontario.ca website, ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/exchange-out-province-drivers-licence

For the less than 2 years section with exchange, it just says when you get 2 full years then you can do the G2 road test to get the full G, but does not mention that in the mean time you can get a G2, infact it says the opposite, that you sit on the G1 license!

But then i found this on the drive test website, drivetest.ca/EN/licencing/Pages/Exchanging-a-Reciprocal-Licence.aspx

Now it does say that i would be eligible to exchange my license for a G2 and use it for the remainder of the mandatory wait period before being able to take the road test for the full G.

So, which one is correct? Or am i just misinterpreting what it says on the Ontario website?

Thanks.

I believe it is not very clear on the Ontario website but I have known of people coming to Ontario with a brand new license and getting G2.
