I am a US citizen getting married to a Canadian citizen, we intend to get married and my spouse will sponsor me for permanent residence status.
This is my question.......................

Must we be married before I can move my belongings to BC?

You need to have permanent residency before you can actually move to Canada and bring your belongings. Until then, all you can do is visit.

Do not say to the border services of Canada that you are moving.

They will deny you entry. My wife is American and I know from experience.

Tell the border services you are visiting. Never say you are moving until you get the permanent resident status.

And don't come visiting with all your stuff in a U-Haul either. They will not believe you :)

It is best to travel lightly and if you are flying having a round trip ticket and just in case have a letter of employment, lease/mortgage statement etc to prove that you have ties to US to go back to.
