Moving to Canada early - change of address - Canada or Japan?

Hello,

I've applied to sponsor my wife who is Japanese. We applied in March and are still waiting to hear a decision. I had been asked to provide proof that I would be moving to Canada 2 months ago and sent a lot more documentation in proving this but I have not heard anything since then.

I have a job starting in November and we will be moving next month. As far as I've read, my wife can come as a visitor (Japanese do not need a visa) and she can wait for 6 months by which time we will have hopefully received her PR.

My question is, I will need to change the address CIC has on file for our application. I do not have a place yet in Canada. We will rent one after moving. Should I change the address to my parents' address in Canada or her parents' address in Japan? Or does it not really matter?

the applicant will want to change their address to their current place of residence. this is where CIC will send the approval paper (COPR). If CIC has a japanese address from the application, it will be sent there. if your wife wants to receive the approval paper in canada while she is there, then she should change her address with the visa office. she can use your parents or wait until you get a place of your own - which ever works best for you. The best way to change an address is by sending a case specific inquiry directly to the visa office. Just changing it online doesn't guarantee the visa office will see it. We've seen instances where people only change their address online and their COPR gets mailed to their old address.

as the sponsor, there's no reason to update your address since you already have sponsor approval. nothing more will be sent to the sponsor at this point.

For sponsors in Canada, it's not really important for a sponsor to update their address after sponsor approval.

However, for a sponsor living abroad, especially one such as OP who has already been asked for more proof of intent to return, it is important to update IRCC that they have actually returned to Canada.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess to make sure I will update online and also with the visa office (Manila). I think I will use my parents address in Canada. One of my concerns is because of moving out/moving in, there will be a period of a few weeks where we don't have our own address. If CIC should send something during that time it could get lost. If I change the correspondence address to my parents address, is it fine to just leave it or should I again update it once we have rented our own place?

it's fine to do either. personally, i'd just leave it as your parent's address.
