as far as i know, you will first get an immigrant visa with 1 year validity. you need to land during that time. once you arrived (initial landing) in Canada, that's the time your PR status will start.

your visa is being issued with a 5 years validity and a date which you have to do your 1st landing before. this date is usually one year from the date you have done your medicals (you can find this date on the visa).

Brajesh388,

Applicant will get PR visa valid for 1 year from the date of medical examination. It means that applicant will have less than 1 years to land in Canada when PR visa is issued. If he/she doesn't land before the expiry of PR visa, PR visa will expire and he/she will have to apply from the start.

After 1st landing, visa is expired and applicant becomes PR of Canada. He/she receives PR card which he/she will use to enter the Canada again, if required. PR card is valid for 5 years and PR card holder will have to stay for minimum 2 years out of 5 years in Canada to retain his/her PR status.
