I'm a single mom looking to relocate from the us to Canada. My grandmother was born there and I went when I was very young. My passion is cooking and canada has to the most amazing food. Looking to move and start my catering business there. I currently am on leave from work because of summer vacation. I am a culinary professional with 10+ experience. What are the steps I need to take to apply for citizenship

Based on the information provided, you most likely aren't a Canadian citizen and don't qualify to apply for Canadian citizenship since you are the second generation born abroad. Assuming you aren't a Canadian citizen, you will need to apply for permanent residency if you want to move to Canada and live and work here. Canada has a number of different immigration programs each with its own requirements. You can find detailed information about these programs here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

Once you become a permanent resident and have lived in Canada for several years, you will qualify to apply for citizenship.

The Start Up visa is a path for people who have a business idea and want to start a business in Canada. However the application process isn't that easy. First of all the business has to be innovative (i.e. something new). So if you're just going to start a catering business, that's not a new idea and you won't fit the category. You have to find a designated organization (incubator) in Canada that will support your business idea. This can be quite challenging to do as well.

Based on the information you've provided, I would recommend you look into the Express Entry program instead. This involves creating a profile and hoping you have enough points to be selected (you want to have more than 400 points to have a decent change of being selected). To qualify in this categories you do need to have skilled work experience (which you should if you're a cook). You'll need to get your education officially assessed before you can create a profile - and also take an English language test (IELTS General) and achieve a high score (more points for higher scores). You'll also need to make sure you have enough funds to apply (you need to have money available to support yourself as you get established in Canada).
