Hi,

My mother was born in Canada. She has resided in America for over 25 years and has a dual citizenship (Canadian and American).

I was born before 2009 and would like to apply for a Canadian citizenship. Do I need to follow the normal requirements such as filling out the application etc? Or am I automatically a Canadian Citizen because my mother is?
A little fuzzy on the laws here.

Thanks

You are probably already Canadian, but when exactly were you born? Regardless, you need to apply for a citizenship certificate from CIC if you want definitive proof of citizenship.

Thank you

Date of birth really doesn't matter any more. If your parent was born in Canada, you're Canadian. However, if you want to prove that you're Canadian (to get a passport, move to Canada, etc.), you need to apply for a certificate of citizenship.
