I was born in the U.K. to a Canadian mother who gave up her Canadian citizenship to become a British citizen (which was necessary at the time) before I was born. She never applied to get her Canadian citizenship back - can I still apply to be a citizen?

She was born in Newfoundland before 1949.

The answer depends on what you mean by "gave up her Canadian citizenship." Do you mean that she went through the Canadian High Commission in the U.K. and applied for and received an official renunciation of her citizenship, or do you mean that she renounced her Canadian citizenship only to British authorities? If it is the former, such as if you have a Canadian document acknowledging the renunciation, then you did not inherit Canadian citizenship. If it is the latter, then you are a Canadian citizen and can apply for proof of citizenship through the High Commission.

Thinking more about your situation, since dual citizenship has been allowed by the U.K. since 1949, it is unlikely that Britain would have required that your mother give up her Canadian citizenship. Instead, I think what happened is that by becoming a British citizen between 1947 and 1977, she
lost (as opposed to "gave up") her Canadian citizenship. If that is the case, she (if still living) and you are Canadian citizens. Her proof is her birth certificate. If you would like proof of Canadian citizenship for yourself, look here:
