Montreal University Advice For An International Student

Hi guys,

This is my first post here, I was wondering if any of you would be kind enough to answer some of my questions. I'm from England, and planning to come to Montréal as an international student on a graduate/master's degree program.

What I really need to know is as follows:

1. I am looking to continue my education in either the field of Counselling, Psychology or Neuroscience - Or related fields to these subjects. Which university would be best for this area of study?

2. What is the selection criteria for scholarships? Would I be eligible for assistance with this? As my funds may be quite limited, and I would need to support myself on a student visa.

3. Which universities or community colleges offer masters degrees in the above fields but have very reasonable tuition fees, but at the same time good standing and reputation?

4. What can I expect to pay for tuition fees at a respectable yet good value for money institution?

5. Is it possible to complete a Master's Degree in one of the above subjects within a year?

6. Which parts of Montréal have the nicest french birds?

Don't expect scholarships. Expect to have to have to pay your own way. You should budget a minimum of $25K per year.

Yes - it's possible you may be able to obtain a Master's in one year - it will depend on the school and program you select. Community Colleges don't offer Masters degrees - so you'll need to attend a university. If you want to pay less money, then you will be attending a university that has a lower ranking. If you want a high ranking university, then you should expect to pay more money (they two are generally connected).

Could I ask you, what opportunities for work are open to an international student to support themselves?

International students can work up to 20 hours a week part time. Typically jobs are minimum wage (around $10 per hour before taxes). This means you will make enough money to cover some of your living expenses. However you certainly won't make enough to cover all of your living expenses or your tuition.

i noticed that the international fees of Masters program is almost double than the diploma programs. So why not just get diploma program, graduate from it, work a little bit and save, get into Masters program part time then life goes on?

Thanks for your message mate, and the advice. I just worry about time running out, I've made so many mistakes in the past. When you say diploma, do you refer to something like a post-graduate diploma? I suppose I could do this and then apply for residence afterwards. I could save up the money before I go, I'd just really need to find work for 20 hours like the previous poster mentioned. Are postgraduate diplomas recognized as much as a masters? No - they definitely aren't recognized as much as masters. In some professions they're pretty much ignored on resumes.

in some professions, you don't even need postgraduate studies. bachelor's degree and you will be fine.
