its the past tense. "READ" pronounced as red"
it means you've read everything and nothing to read (pronounced reed)

had you scrolled down, you would've found "you have no messages to read."
Also, when you have messages, the text is Read instead of Read.
I think the design is not that bad, but required improvement to avoid ambiguity.
Also, I'm not a software engineer
