My husband has been told he has a bicuspid aortic valve. We are thinking that he may get a heart valve replacement within the next year or so. If he gets this will he fail a medical for immigrating to Canada? He has a skilled trade and will have a fully working heart valve after the surgery.

Also,,if he doesnt end up needing surgery anytime soon,,will having a bicuspid aortic valve be a problem passing the medical?

Who do i contact to ask these kinds of questions?

Thanks in advance xx

He must declare above conditions to Dr. You should do the replacement as soon as possible as Life is more important than anything else.
The metal valve will last a lifetime but requires you to take blood thinners. Its life depends on your age, your overall health, other medical conditions you have, your heart function. Biologic valves are more prone to deterioration and may require a second operation. In your case; mechanical valve lasts longer, but patients have to take a blood thinner for life to prevent dangerous clots and bleeding. It is hard to say and will be a Q. I dont see any reason for refusal on this condition. Here is Instructions for screening clients with cardiac disease in the context of the Canadian immigration medical examination (IME).

If he doesn't get the replacement valve and will need it done in Canada he would likely be refused but after the surgery it is hard to give an accurate opinion. Was this part of a greater heart issue or a disease process, does he have other conditions, etc. Nobody can really tel you but chances are much better after he has had he procedure and had some decent recovery time.
