Are there different waiting periods for health care coverage in the provinces, when landing as a PR ? I'm pregnant and I would like to give birth in Canada but for outside sponsorship I'll have a maximum of 6 months waiting period. I am aware that having my baby in Canada is going to be tight for time, so I'm wondering if its even possible and if so, are there ways to speed the process up?

hey,

there are different waiting times according to provinces. I don't know all details because it also depends on your situation...

Apparently in BC if your husband is already a resident of BC you can be added to his medical plan provided that you have applied for PR. I haven't tried it myself, so can't guarantee.
ALberta apparently doesn't have a waiting period, but you will have to stay in Alberta afterwards, otherwise they might ask you to pay back the medical costs.
For the other provinces I don't know, and I am not sure how you could speed up the process (either for PR or for registration... but if you're able to be in Canada because you're from a non visa-exempt country, and you could come on a tourist visa, tht might be a possibility... if your husband is already in Canada, he should call his own medical plan and see what he could get for you.
Good luck (and congrats on the pregnancy),

Alberta gives you immediate healthcare if you move from an international location. So if you land in Alberta, you can apply for healthcare asap. You can even get your number at the registry before going home. You don't have to wait on your card. However, you must remain in Alberta for at least 6 months after arriving or you will be backcharged for the costs.

What province are you moving to and where are you from?
