What is the situation when one family member fails the medical check up? Does it mean the entire application is refused ?

yes, the entire application will be refused.
That is the reason, why they ask the family members to take the test whether accompanying or non accompanying.

is this really a given for the medicals?
heard from a friend, unless your medical condition is not that serious to be having lifetime treatment, then you need not worry.
i guess the point is for as long as your current condition is cureable, then there is no cause for concern.

can someone validate this?

Life threatening or any medical condition which will require extensive health care services thus costing lot of money to govt or any condition which can transmit easily to others and can cause danger to public health.

Medicals consist of history questionnaire, blood and urine test, blood pressure test, general health examination, eye test and chest xray. The results will depend, different medical centres would have different times, average time for results is normally 1 week.

I didnt really get that bit of Regional Visa Office. Medicals are sent when they check your documents and assess points and want to further proceed ur application. It's done by your local visa office.
