what exactly does it entail? Im having to go to a male doctor and am not thrilled at the idea of it all, im young enough to not require a pap smear but other than that i dont know

Also can you fail the exam because of mental illness such as depression and self harm? Or will it make the process take longer?

I don't think a mental illness can create any problems in your application, though it depends on the doctor's decision. he will ask you questions related to it and if he is not satisfied with the answer he might cause a problem with your application.

they required medical exams even of the newborn kids, so there's no way to avoid a medical exam for the adult even being of young age.

medical exam from what i remember and what hubby did:

basic normal checking - throat, eyes, mouth, ears, back, etc...

x ray

blood work

urine test

they asked himif he smoked, drank, used recreational drugs, used heavy drugs, asked him if he had broken any bones before or had major surgury and asked him what illnesses if any run in his family

That was it...

No matter what you have to complete the medical!

Dont worry yourself! Focus on being with your family while going through it!

Its pretty hard to diagnose mental problems or depression (from what i know) from blood or urine samples. The doctor will ask if you are on any medication so if you are on medication for the above then i would recommend telling him. But unless you tell the doctor I am sure he will not know unless it is blatently obvious....

if there are self inflicted wounds or scars the doctor may ask how they happened...

good luck

I think it really depends on the doctor and the country. My husband's exam was pretty uneventful. Asked him a few questions, checked his eyes, ears, bp, listened to his chest. Then he went to another room to get the xray and do the blood and urine test. I think that was pretty much it. He never had to get undressed.

As for the question about mental illness, it will NOT cause a problem at all. The only way that any form of mental illness could potentially be an issue with a spousal application is if they believe that the person is a threat to society. If it is simply a case of depression, that is NOT an issue for immigration purposes. Though your doctor may ask whether you've received treatment or determine if you need some form of treatment but that would be because he is still a doctor and still needs to look after your health. Don't be worried.

Yeah id heard about potentially needing to fully undress, and as a self harmer thats my worst nightmare and makes it pretty obvious to them that theres a problem. Im seeing a doctor but cant get any treatment as she decided since im leaving the country it wasnt her problem, so as im not formally 'getting help' i wondered if it may hinder it at all.
Hopefully ill be lucky lol

The doctor was being extra diligent, perhaps she was new to this. We came out knowing that they checked as much as they could and a re-medical would probably be rare. We called a couple of days later and they did confirm that they found no issues even after looking at the X-Ray etc.

From what my husband said it was pretty standard. I don't remember him saying he had to get undressed but then, he could have done and just forgot to tell me. I noticed you're applying through the London office - are you in the UK? It's shocking that the Dr wouldn't treat you! You could be here for quite some time before getting PR and no mental health issues should go untreated however long you're in the country. If you are in the UK, have you thought about going through the NHS complaints??

Good luck with the medical anyway, hopefully it won't be too bad an experience for you!

My doctors surgery is just abit ridiculous all round lol, i am in the UK yes, ill be doing my medical at the cambridge practice. The NHS complaints system is just a whole bunch of forms, which tbh im sick of after all the visa stuff!! Thanks for the details, sounds like it will just be hit and miss if this guy does a full on check or not!!

Oh also. im planning on flying april 24th, and have booked a one way ticket (cant really afford more than that and need to be there for cousins wedding), do i need to get a visitor visa? or will i be okay to just wait out the rest of the process in canada? not sure how that bit works when entering the country with no visa and no intent to return to my country!

My husband is in the UK and they were pretty thorough. He had to bend over and cough.

They will not turn you away because of depression.

They are only looking for medical conditions that will cause abnormal strain on the health care system. Like AIDS, heart disease, diabetes and things lke that, but even the the latter two might not necessarily exclude you.

How long did you wait to get in Silver_Spirit? My husband waited about 6 weeks for his appointment through Bristol. It was a nightmare, held us up for quite a while.

Cheers and best of luck :)
