Medical exam confusion

I'm applying outland, common law sponsor. On the application form checklist it says we need prrof of a medical exam. On the CIC website it says

Medical Examination Instructions
Instructions on how to take the medical examination will normally be sent to you after you submit your application to the visa office.

So when exactly do I take the exam? Before I send it in? Should I wait until I hear from them asking me to go get one? It seems a bit confusing.

Those instructions are for the family sponsorship stream (i.e. parents, grandparents). For spousal, you must do the medical in advance and submit evidence that the medical has been completed along with the application.

Make sure you are reading the correct guide. Like scylla said, you need to collect ALL documents BEFORE sending in the application and send everything AT ONCE.

From the Immigration Guide (IMM 3999): "Information on medical instructions is provided in <a href="http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp#region">Part 3: Country Specific Instructions</a>. You will find the medical form, instructions and a list of doctors in your area who are authorized to conduct immigration medicals."
