Medical/Criminal Check

Hello everyone! After deciding not to hire a lawyer for the immigration process and choosing to fill everything out ourselves, things have been going well so far. We've looked over every form that we will have to fill out and for the most part they seem very straightforward.

That being said, the two areas of the sponsorship process that we're still not entirely clear on are the medical and criminal checks.
We've read the pages on CIC about both of these processes, but we're still very unclear on what to do.

Could anyone possibly give us a step-by-step of what we need to do to complete both of these parts of the sponsorship process?
Don't be afraid of dumbing it down as much as possible :p

My wife is from the U.S. (Wisconsin, if that matters), so I hear she will have to get her criminal check from the FBI?

Well, you are kind of in trouble if you plan to send your application any time soon, as the FBI is backed up and it takes a few months to get it. You can put in a letter of explanation and send it when you get it however. She needs to send in a background check for every country she has lived in for more than 6 months (except for Canada).

For the FBI check, first she needs to get her fingerprints done, either by ink and roll or by a scanner, there are many places to have this done, either at a police station or one of the many private places that do it in the US. If she gets ink and roll, send in multiple copies as a backup incase some aren't readable.

Then you just send a form in with the fingerprints to the FBI.

As for the medical, phone the closest doctor on the CIC panel list and go get the medical done. THey will give you a receipt or form to send with the application.

Thank you! This was exactly what we needed. We're not in THAT big of a rush, honestly. We were thinking of finishing up all of the forms before doing the medical/criminal and saving those for last, so that when the results come back, we can send everything immediately and not have to worry about them expiring (hopefully!) Do you see anything wrong with that plan?

Unrelated question but we just thought of something. If we're speaking technically, she's my fiance at the moment. We will be married before starting of course, the wedding is planned for after Christmas. Our question is, once we are married, will she need to get a new passport? She IS NOT changing her name, so there will be no need for a name change, but I was wondering about how important it was to change her status from Single to Married on the passport.

Apply for the FBI reports ASAP as those take the longest, and make sure you order them directly from the FBI as 3rd party reports are not accepted. Do the medical right before you plan to mail in your application.

There is nowhere on the US passport that states marital status, so no she does not have to do anything. She would only need to get a new passport if her current one is expiring soon or she does change her name.
