I have sponsored my husband and I wanted to ask if I apply for maternity benefits and or unemployment insurance, will that hurt chances for him getting a visa? Does it come in the category of social assistance? I have already passed stage 1in sponsor approval. Thanks!

EI does not. I am not positive about maternity benefits, but I don't think so.

Maternity Leave Benefits and EI are not social assistance. In fact, Maternity Leave is basically drawing EI benefits. One of the reasons a lot of women hate about Maternity Leave is that once they came back to work, they cannot collect EI again until they work so many hours/days again before qualifying. If they get laid off temporary or let go permanently after coming back from Maternity Leave, they are screwed as they then cannot collect EI.
