I am putting together an application to be sponsored as a spouse for Canada.
I am female Us Citizen and my husband is Canadian.

We got married in Canada and are ready to send the application package off so I can live in Canada. Since I have no intention on staying in the USA, do I have to let my government know I am married? Will the visa office processing my application look me up and see that I am still "single" in the USA?

Thanks!

I doubt that they will have access to US status, but to be on safer side you should update your status with govt.

So you are moving to Canada not the vice versa. That s gud 1 ;)

Gud Luck :)

I assume you are already in Canada and submitting an inland application?

You don't have to let "the government" know you are married. The only thing that really matters is your status for tax purposes. So if you intend to file any more US income taxes, then you would need to file as married (so I guess this would need notification to IRS).

In Canada your husband should have already informed the CRA that he got married and is no longer single.

You really should update your passport with new married name, your social security card (because if you have worked AT ALL in the US, you are entitled to claim that later on when you retire in Canada), also, keep in mind, unless you plan to renounce your US Citizenship later on, you will STILL need to file a US tax return each and every tax year. This will be in addition to a Canadian tax return. The US will give you credit for the taxes you have paid in Canada as part of their tax treaty, so it is a very very VERY rare instance where you would actually owe the US any kind of taxes.
